What is anxiety, and how do I know if I have anxiety?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

Anxiety is a common mental health condition involving ongoing worry, fear, or nervousness that feels difficult to control and can interfere with daily life. While occasional anxiety is normal, it may indicate an anxiety condition if symptoms are persistent, excessive, or out of proportion to the situation.

You may be experiencing anxiety if you notice ongoing worry, racing thoughts, difficulty relaxing, sleep problems, irritability, poor concentration, or physical symptoms such as a rapid heartbeat, nausea, shortness of breath, or muscle tension. If these symptoms occur most days and affect your work, relationships, or wellbeing, speaking with a psychologist can help clarify whether anxiety is present and what support may be beneficial.

What are the common symptoms of anxiety?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

Common symptoms of anxiety can include persistent worry, racing or intrusive thoughts, difficulty concentrating, irritability, restlessness, and feeling on edge. Physical symptoms are also common and may include a rapid heartbeat, chest tightness, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, sweating, muscle tension, headaches, and sleep disturbance. Anxiety can also cause avoidance of situations, reassurance-seeking, or difficulty completing everyday tasks when symptoms feel overwhelming.

Symptoms vary between individuals and can fluctuate over time. If anxiety symptoms are frequent, difficult to control, or interfere with daily functioning, relationships, or work, support from a psychologist can help identify the cause and provide effective treatment strategies.

What causes anxiety?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

Anxiety is caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. These may include genetic vulnerability, differences in brain chemistry, personality traits, chronic stress, traumatic experiences, ongoing health conditions, or major life changes. Work pressures, relationship difficulties, financial stress, and past negative experiences can also contribute to the development or worsening of anxiety. Often, anxiety develops from several factors interacting rather than a single cause.

What types of anxiety disorders are there?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

There are several types of anxiety disorders, each with distinct features. Common types include Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), which involves persistent and excessive worry; Panic Disorder, characterised by sudden panic attacks; Social Anxiety Disorder, involving fear of social situations or judgment; and Specific Phobias, which are intense fears of particular objects or situations. Anxiety can also occur alongside conditions such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). A psychologist can help identify the type of anxiety and recommend appropriate treatment.

How is anxiety treated by a psychologist?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

Anxiety is treated by a psychologist using evidence-based psychological therapies tailored to the individual. Treatment commonly involves Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to identify and change unhelpful thought patterns, exposure-based strategies to gradually reduce avoidance, and skills to manage physical anxiety symptoms such as relaxation and grounding techniques. Therapy also focuses on building coping strategies, improving emotional regulation, and addressing underlying stressors. Treatment is collaborative and adjusted based on progress and goals.

Does therapy really help with anxiety?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

Yes, therapy is an effective treatment for anxiety. Research shows that evidence-based psychological therapies, particularly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), help many people reduce anxiety symptoms, improve coping skills, and regain confidence in daily life. Therapy provides structured support, practical tools, and a safe space to understand anxiety patterns and learn strategies to manage them. Many people experience meaningful and lasting improvement, especially when treatment is tailored to their individual needs.

What psychological therapies are effective for anxiety?

Several psychological therapies are effective for anxiety, depending on the individual and the type of anxiety experienced. Common evidence-based approaches include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which helps identify and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours; Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on reducing avoidance and building psychological flexibility; and exposure-based therapies, which gradually reduce fear responses. Therapy may also include skills for emotion regulation, relaxation, and stress management, tailored to the person’s needs.

How long does therapy for anxiety usually take?

The length of therapy for anxiety varies depending on the type and severity of anxiety, individual goals, and how symptoms respond to treatment. Many people notice improvement within 6 to 12 sessions, particularly with structured, evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Some individuals may benefit from longer-term support, especially if anxiety is longstanding or linked to complex life stressors. A psychologist will regularly review progress and adjust treatment as needed.

Can anxiety be treated via telehealth psychology?

Yes, anxiety can be effectively treated via telehealth psychology. Research shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person treatment for many anxiety conditions. Telehealth allows you to work with a registered psychologist using evidence-based therapies such as CBT and ACT, while accessing care from home. It offers flexibility, privacy, and continuity of support, making it a convenient option for many people across Australia.

Do I need a referral and Mental Health Care Plan to see a psychologist for anxiety?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

You do not need a referral to see a psychologist for anxiety, and you can self-refer at any time. However, if you would like to access Medicare rebates, you will need a referral and Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. A Mental Health Care Plan allows eligible clients to receive up to 10 Medicare-rebated psychology sessions per calendar year. Your psychologist can support you with the process and provide reports to your GP as needed.

Can I get Medicare rebates for anxiety treatment?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

Yes, you can get Medicare rebates for anxiety treatment if you have a valid referral and Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Under Medicare’s Better Access initiative, eligible clients can receive rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions per calendar year. Medicare rebates help reduce the out-of-pocket cost of therapy, and sessions can be provided via telehealth or in person. Your psychologist can assist by providing progress reports to your GP as part of this process.

What happens in the first psychology session for anxiety?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

In the first psychology session for anxiety, your psychologist will focus on understanding what you’re experiencing and what has led you to seek support. This usually includes discussing your current symptoms, personal history, stressors, and goals for therapy. The psychologist may explain how anxiety works, outline a treatment plan, and discuss suitable therapy approaches. The first session is collaborative, confidential, and paced to help you feel comfortable and supported.

What is the difference between stress and anxiety?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

Stress and anxiety are related but different experiences. Stress is usually a response to an external pressure, such as work demands or life changes, and often eases once the situation resolves. Anxiety tends to persist even when the stressor is gone and may involve excessive worry, fear, or physical symptoms that feel difficult to control. While stress is a normal part of life, ongoing anxiety may benefit from psychological support.

Can anxiety go away on its own without treatment?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

In some cases, mild anxiety may improve on its own, particularly if it is linked to a temporary life stressor. However, ongoing or severe anxiety often does not fully resolve without support and can worsen over time if left untreated. Psychological therapy can help people understand anxiety patterns, develop effective coping strategies, and reduce symptoms more sustainably. Seeking support early can improve outcomes and prevent anxiety from becoming more disruptive.

When should I seek professional help for anxiety?
Frame 3.png
Frame 2.png

You should seek professional help for anxiety if symptoms are persistent, worsening, or interfering with daily life, work, relationships, or sleep. Signs may include constant worry, panic attacks, avoidance of situations, physical symptoms, or feeling unable to cope despite trying to manage on your own. Support from a psychologist can help clarify what’s happening, provide practical strategies, and prevent anxiety from becoming more disruptive over time.
