Changes to Tele-Health in Australia

Since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic Psychology sessions online have risen dramatically with its users opting to see a psychologist online rather than face to face due to availability and travel restrictions. This increase was seen across the medical/healthcare field. The digitisation is a growing area across both the medical and mental health services. Telepsychology also referred to as telehealth psychology and online psychology, is when psychological services are provided online via video or phone.

Telehealth psychology is still an emerging area but is particularly important for those living in rural and remote areas of Australia. Due to the potential benefits of telehealth psychology the Australian Government expanded the Better Access initiative to include telehealth psychology services allowing greater access to Psychologists via online video conferencing (as outlined in the Medicare Benefits Scheme (MBS).

To access a Medicare rebate for an online psychology session, you will need to speak with your GP about a Mental Health Care Plan.
